Hey everyone. My name is Dave, and I am a Special Agent/Pilot with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). I would like to tell you about the really cool, fun job I have. I can't think of anything better to do each day. I get to go to work each day and fly. A typical day is like this. I show up at the office not knowing what is going to happen or where I'm going to travel. It is not in the least bit dull or routine. One week the DEA may send me to help watch some drug dealers with other enforcement Special Agents in
San Diego, CA. The next week my job could be to move important technical equipment to Special Agents in South America. The following week I might fly a very important person out of Washington, DC to speak at a DEA drug conference for state and local police departments. The assignments of DEA Special Agent/Pilots are always changing.
Just like some of you, I grew up moving all over the place, went to three different high schools and two colleges. The most important thing is that I graduated from college because that's required for all Special Agents in DEA. It was hard work, but it has paid off. I started flying at about 19 in a tiny little Cessna. After getting my flight instructor's ratings, I started to teach others how to fly. One day, a friend told me, much like I am sharing with you, that DEA had an aviation section. So, I called a recruiter on the phone, and after asking me some questions, the DEA sent me the paperwork to start the application process. Just like Sharon and the other DEA Special Agents, I went to training at the DEA Academy in Quantico, VA. After Basic Agent Training, the DEA sent me to work at two enforcement locations where I worked "on the street" for a total of 10 years before applying to become a DEA Special Agent/Pilot. However, Special Agents are only required to work the "street" for two years before applying for a Special Agent/Pilot position.
Do you like to travel and be assigned on adventurous missions? Do you love to fly? Would you like to work with other people who try to keep drugs off the streets? Then maybe, the DEA Aviation Division is the place for you.
By the way, you don't have to wear a stuffy suit and tie. Most of our pilots get to wear cool flight suits made of Nomex, which is the same material that NASCAR drivers wear for their races. This is a great job. Where else would they pay you to fly multi-million dollar aircraft, give you a badge, a gun and a car? This is a great place to work. Come join us!
