Student Loans: Who Knew?

It’s the law—students convicted of drug crimes—possessing or selling illegal drugs—may be prohibited from receiving federal student loans. Students convicted of controlled substances crimes may be able to regain eligibility for such loans either after a waiting period, by successfully completing a drug rehabilitation program, or if their conviction is “rendered nugatory.”

The application worksheet for federal student loans clearly states that “A federal law suspends federal student aid eligibility for students convicted under federal or state law for possession or sale of illegal drugs (not including alcohol or tobacco). If the answer to this question is “yes”, you will be taken to the Question 31 worksheet to help you determine whether this law affects the student’s eligibility for federal student aid. Check it out for yourself.
