Presidential Message on Red Ribbon Week
On Friday, October 22, 2010, the White House issued a Presidential Message on Red Ribbon Week. Signed by President Barack Obama, the message reads:
"I send greetings to all those participating in Red Ribbon Week.
Illicit drug use and untreated addiction can pose harmful consequences, including violence, failure in school, job loss, child abuse, crime, and death. By boosting community-based prevention, expanding treatment, strengthening law enforcement, and working collaboratively with our partners at every level of society, we can reduce drug use and the great damage it causes in our communities.
Earlier this year, I released a National Drug Control Strategy which calls for a coordinated, collaborative, and balanced approach to confronting the complex challenge of drug use and its consequences. Initiatives like Red Ribbon Week support this endeavor, encouraging Americans to stand up against drugs and lead healthy lives.
As you come together in this effort against drugs and honor the memory of United States Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, I wish you all the best."
