Anabolic Steroids: Anabolic steroids are synthetically produced variants of the naturally occurring male hormone testosterone.  The two main effects of these drugs are androgenic (developing male characteristics) and anabolic (buidling muscles).  The three main patterns of abuse include: cycling (alternating periods of use); stacking (using two or more at the same time); and pyramiding (progressively increasing and then decreasing doses and types of steroids).  Besides the short-term effects on both men and women, long-term use can lead to adverse cardioviscular effects, liver dysfunction, liver tumors, liver cancer, and cancer of the prostate in men.
